Guatamala City, Guatamala -- A baby rescued by firefighters after she was accidentally born into a pit toilet died late Tuesday, El Grafico newspaper reported Wednesday.
According to the report, 26-year-old Nelvia Diaz knew she was in labor Tuesday but did not realize how close she was to giving birth when she went to the bathroom and sat on the toilet, only to feel the baby girl slide out and fall into the pit beneath her. [Emphasis mine]
Firefighters used tubes to supply oxygen to the baby while they spent four hours tearing down the outhouse and destroying the concrete slab covering the human waste pit.
The baby was alive when she was taken to a local hospital, but the newspaper said she died hours later.
