I haven't been to a funeral in a while. None of my friends have died this
year. I should rejoice. But I don't feel anything. AIDS is over, even
though its not over. I am forgetting the names of friends who died. I
run into the "old guard" here and there. No more talk of who has died or
what is being done to care for those who have not. No more intensity of
living. No echoing footsteps of the divine. Soldiers without wars to
fight. Nothing to remind me that every moment is a sacred gift. A
picture of an angel hung behind the door of a new home shared by a new
partner too young to understand. World AIDS Day, 1997.
